I have had my trusty tie up shirts for five years now precisely! High waisted fashion was just starting to come about and I had fully discovered American Apparel after moving to London for Uni (when I went to Mexico in 2007 I first stepped foot in one and thought it was an overpriced H&M – oh how I was ignorant).
The first thing I ever bought was the Jersey Pocket Skirt in red. I didn’t have any cropped tops and there weren’t many interesting ones about on the high street.
I invited my mum and dad for lunch in London on a Saturday, followed by a favourite market of mine: Portobello Market. In the northern end by Ladbroke Grove tube station, I found a market stall towards the back that were selling these cropped tie up shirts in this bright tropical floral pattern.
At £7 I thought it was an absolute beaut of a bargain and no one else would have it (I still haven’t seen anyone wearing it).
A year later and I had moved to a street off the Old Kent Road (one of the cheapy brown streets on Monopoly). One day looking around Elephant and Castle market, amid all the stalls selling Millwall embellished towels and string vest tops, I came across an understated stall selling some super duper merchandise! I thought £7 was a bargain…they were selling the same style of cropped tie shirts for £1! WTF?!
There were a few patterns to choose from but I ended up buying a plain white one and a dainty floral pattern. White – as it goes with everything, and the floral pattern is very cute with a classic vintage look (as oppose to my tropical floral one I already had).
Aaaaand I bought some black floral high waisted culottes which have been a favourite item of mine (not featured here). SO GOOD! I have been meaning to go back to the market and see if that stall is still there.
I’ll probably buy some Bob Marley memorabilia while I’m there. FYI – you can also buy underwear with bum pads for a temporary bum lift.
As it’s Autumn soon I thought about getting a long sleeved one. I found this one on Glam Boutique by 18 and East; it’s adorable. The long sleeves would be perfect for those cold windy days and I love the Victorianesque soft blue print. It’s also in the SALE!
Glam Boutique, £20
I love this one from ASOS as well, and it’s HALF PRICE! A simple block colour goes with most things and I am very very into lilac at the moment. I recently bought some lilac jeans and blazer…maybe I could wear them all together? NOT! I’m not a fan of this look ASOS have put together on the model though, I would have preferred it if they styled it with something high waisted. Do you have a cropped tie shirt? How do you wear yours?
