Curly hair problems – how to style curly hair

Untangle me

I only ever brush or comb my hair when it’s wet, never when dry unless I’m going for the Diana Ross look! The best tools for detangling are either a wide toothed comb or Tangle Teezer. A wide toothed comb helps separate the curls and is what I’ve always used. But Nissa and I recently started using the Tangle Teezer. I didn’t think it would work on my curly hair but it’s amazing how quickly it gets through the knots and I feel like my hair has been a lot less static and frizzy since I started using it.

Style me beautiful

After washing and conditioning I’ll use a little bit of Moroccan oil on the ends while my hair is still wet, squeeze some of the excess water out with a towel, and then run Moroccan Oil curl defining cream through my hair. Nissa likes to use Aveda Be Curly, and another product I’ve used recently and really like is label.M curl cream. I’ve found that the best way to dry my hair is just to let it dry naturally. I do occasionally use a diffuser to dry my hair, but if you do that you have to use the lowest settings, if you have the dryer on too hot it will just make your hair frizz up. The other tip is to only dry your hair until it’s about 75% dry. In between washes I find that my curls can go a bit fluffy or a bit flat so I use a leave in conditioner spray to revive my curls, mine and Nissa’s current favourite is a leave in milk protein and olive oil treatment spray by Sofnfree which we found in the children’s section of an afro hair shop, but we’ve also found it on Amazon.

I also use a curling wand now and then for a night out when I want my curls to look their best or if they’re looking a bit flat. My top tip when styling with a curling wand is to wash your hair a day or two before, I find that my hair holds the curl a lot better.

p.s. I mentioned that Nissa and I had recently tried a new hair mask. Well the verdict is in and we both really like it. I recently had my hair highlighted and it’s really helped condition the ends of my hair after the harsh colour. It’s called Silicon Mix and we ordered it from Amazon. Here’s a link if you want to get a pot Silicon Mix.
